Caturra

Also Caturra Vermelho, Red Caturra

Caturra is a single-gene dwarf mutant of Bourbon first noticed in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its short internodes allow dense planting and high production per hectare, and it launched intensive, full-sun coffee farming across Latin America. It has green leaf tips and branches that leave the stem almost at right angles. The weakness that drove a generation of breeding is its complete susceptibility to coffee leaf rust; crossed with the Timor Hybrid it became the parent of the Catimor family and of the Colombian composite varieties.
