Castillo

Also Variedad Castillo, Castillo General, Castillo Regionales, Castillo zona Norte/Centro/Sur

Castillo is Colombia's dominant modern variety, released by the National Coffee Growers' Federation in May 2005 after five generations of selection from Caturra x Timor Hybrid crosses. It is a composite of many progenies, so a field shows plants with both green and bronze leaf tips; it is compact, productive and durably rust-resistant, with tolerance to coffee berry disease. Seven regional versions were released in 2005-2006 and the mix was recomposed into three zonal variants (North, Centre, South) in 2017 to raise the resistance level pre-emptively. By 2012 more than 90 percent of Colombia's renovated area had been planted with Castillo.
