Batian

Batian is Kenya's second resistant variety, released around 2010 as a composite of several pure lines selected from the Ruiru 11 breeding population after backcrossing toward the SL quality types. Unlike dwarf Ruiru 11 it is a taller tree that can be propagated from seed as a true-breeding composite. Its coffee berry disease resistance has held up under epidemic conditions, and fingerprinting panels now use it as a reference, which is how a Kenyan Batian turned up masquerading as 'Sidra' in Ecuador.
