Ruiru 11

Ruiru 11 is Kenya's compact hybrid variety, bred at the Ruiru research station after the coffee berry disease epidemic of 1968 and introduced to estates in the mid-1980s. It is a three-way hybrid produced by hand pollination from a male Catimor-type parent and female lines combining Sudan Rume, K7 and SL material, so every seed lot is a mixture of related hybrids. Its resistance to CBD has proven durable and it ranked among the most rust-resistant entries in the 29-site international trial, where its response pattern matched the hybrid EC16 across the largest group of sites.
