N39

Also N.39, Bourbon N39

N39 is the Bourbon-type selection made in northern Tanzania in the 1920s that, with the Kent-type KP423, was the only commercial arabica in the country until 2004. TaCRI records yields of only 1 to 1.5 tonnes per hectare even under heavy fungicide use because the variety is highly susceptible to both leaf rust and coffee berry disease, which drove the hybrid breeding programme. Its liquor is rated good for acidity, body and flavour.
