Liberica (cultivated Coffea liberica var. liberica)
Also Barako, Kapeng barako, Liberica
Cultivated Liberica is the West African species Coffea liberica, introduced to Southeast Asia in the late nineteenth century as a rust-tolerant alternative to arabica and now undergoing a revival in Malaysia, Indonesia and Fiji. It is a very large tree with large fruit and seeds, suited to hot lowlands. Liberica has contributed the SH3 rust gene to arabica breeding and is also used as a rootstock. Its caffeine content is similar to arabica.
