Certification

Kosher (OU Kosher)

Kosher certification confirms that a food meets Jewish dietary law. For coffee it is common on supermarket brands, instant coffee and flavoured products. OU Kosher, a program of the Orthodox Union, is the largest agency, certifying more than a million products since 1923; several other agencies issue their own symbols.

What it requires

In this atlas's own words

A kosher agency reviews every ingredient, processing aid and production line and supervises the plant with periodic inspections, then authorises its symbol on approved products. For plain roasted coffee the issues are mainly shared equipment and flavourings; flavoured, instant and ready-to-drink coffees need ingredient approval.
