Certification

EU Organic

EU Organic is the European Union's statutory organic scheme. Coffee imported into the EU and sold as organic must comply with Regulation (EU) 2018/848 and be checked by an approved control body, and EU-packed organic coffee must carry the EU organic logo with the control body code. The scheme is the European counterpart to USDA Organic; the two are separate certifications even though many importers hold both.

What it requires

In this atlas's own words

Operators must register with a control body appointed by their EU country, be inspected at least once a year and hold a certificate before marketing products as organic. Since 1 January 2022 the rules are set by Regulation (EU) 2018/848, which tightened controls and import rules so that organic products sold in the EU meet one standard. Imported organic coffee must have been produced and shipped under recognised control arrangements.

Logo use

The EU organic logo (the leaf of stars) is compulsory on pre-packaged organic food produced and sold in the EU and optional on conforming imports. It may only be used when at least 95 percent of agricultural ingredients are organic, and must be accompanied by the control body's code number and an indication of whether raw materials were farmed in the EU or outside it. It may not be used on products in conversion.
