Certification
Demeter Biodynamic
Demeter is the certification brand of biodynamic agriculture, the farming system practised since 1924. Founded in Germany in 1928, it is now an international federation with members in more than 60 countries and over 7,000 farmers. Biodynamic coffee is rare but exists, and Demeter certification always sits on top of an organic certification.

What it requires
In this atlas's own wordsFarms must meet organic requirements as a base and then the International Demeter Biodynamic Standard, the minimum agreed democratically by member organisations: biodynamic preparations, a self-sustaining farm organism with limits on imported fertility, biodiversity and animal-welfare rules. Demeter farms are inspected annually in addition to the organic inspection, and the standard covers processing and distribution as well as farming.
