Certification

Certified B Corporation

B Corp is a company-level certification run by the nonprofit B Lab, which began in 2006. A number of specialty roasters and importers hold it, and it says something about a company's governance and practices overall rather than about the coffee in a particular bag. B Lab has been rolling out revised standards.

What it requires

In this atlas's own words

B Corp certifies whole companies, not products. A company must complete B Lab's verified assessment of its social and environmental performance, meet B Lab's standards, adopt legal accountability to stakeholders in its governing documents (the form depends on jurisdiction), and publish its profile and impact report. Certification is renewed periodically.
